Gurmesh grew up in Coffs Harbour, where his family has been growing bananas since the 1940s. He attended Woolgoolga High School, where he graduated dux.
Gurmesh completed a Bachelor of Industrial Design, majoring in Industrial and Product Design, from the University of New South Wales in 2006. He subsequently worked as a marketing executive for Qantas Holidays from 2006 to 2007, as an interactive producer at Singleton Ogilvy Interactive from 2007 to 2008, and as a senior producer at MercerBell from 2008 to 2009. Gurmesh also served as a director of Oz Berries from 2011 to 2013, as the vice president of Australian Blueberry Growers Association from 2016 to 2019, and as chairman of Oz Group Berry Co-op, from 2013 to 2019. Gurmesh has also worked as a farmer on his property in the Corindi Range, where he grew macadamias and blueberries.
Gurmesh was elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly as a Nationals Member for the seat of Coffs Harbour in the 2019 State election. He served as the Nationals Whip, and Shadow Minister for Tourism until 2024. He served as Shadow Minister for Emergency Services, Shadow Minister for Regional Health, and Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Trade and Natural Resources until 2026.
He currently serves as Leader of the NSW Nationals, Shadow Minister for Regional NSW, Shadow Minister for Small Business, Shadow Minister for Trade, and Shadow Minister for the North Coast.
Gurmesh’s policy areas of interest include agriculture, education, flood recovery, sporting clubs, and infrastructure. He has also committed himself to increasing tourism in Coffs Harbour by increasing investment into NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services, as well as road infrastructure.
Gurmesh lives in Woolgoolga with his wife Manni and their two children. In his spare time, he enjoys cycling, playing footy and watching cricket.
