Jos de BruinDirector, COSBOA

    Jos de Bruin stepped down as CEO of Master Grocers Australia Ltd, trading as MGA Independent Retailers and Timber Merchants Australia (MGATMA), after leading the organisation for 16 years. MGATMA is a leading national registered employer industry organisation, dedicated to supporting the needs of independently owned food, grocery, licensed supermarkets, bottleshops, timber and hardware businesses, as well as other small business owners. Since departing MGATMA, Jos’s key role, as a Board Director of COSBOA, is to oversee COSBOA’s role to advocate for the needs and prosperity of all small business owners in Australia. Jos does this by contributing to COSBOA’s ongoing development and implementation of small business support strategies that cover a plethora of matters effecting the day to day running of a small business including addressing unfair competition, navigating legal and industrial relations complexities, unsustainable rises in costs to do business such as energy, insurance, taxes and employing staff, driving for increased industry training, as well as, federal (and state) representation Jos brings to this role skills gained from a 35+ year career which has spanned strategic business, sales and marketing leadership roles for leading supplier companies including Unilever, Pacific Dunlop (Adidas) and Lion Nathan, as well as, cofounding and owning a group of independent licensed supermarkets employing over 300 staff. Jos also brings deep insights into the day-to-day management and challenges of running viable commercial food, grocery and liquor retailing businesses, having gained these from his 13-years of experience in owning, managing and growing a chain of independent food and grocery licensed supermarkets. As a Director of COSBOA, Jos is inspired by the challenge of continuing to help small business owners (and startups) to be incentivised and motivated to be innovative, grow their businesses, employ more staff and prosper in their pursuit of being successful small business owners.
